Here at Child Autism UK, we understand that, just as no child is the same, no family circumstances are the same either; whether that be practical constraints, financial circumstances or simply where you are with your child’s journey, we are here to help in a way that suits your specific needs.

With over 25 years experience of working with children, their families, and supporting in a range of educational settings, we are in a unique position to be able to ensure that we can meet your family’s needs.

We offer two main routes

  1. Short-Term Support (up to 4 months)
  2. Full Support (more than 4 months)

Autism support works best when the child is supported across all areas of their life e.g. home, school/nursery, community. We achieve this by setting up a programme tailor-made to your child’s specific needs and then giving on-going training and support to the key people in their lives.

Which route is best for my child and my family?

Short-term Support Full Support
For when you want to help your child with one or two core skills over a summer holiday or a short term period. For when you’ve done extensive research about autism-support based on behaviour analysis (also known as ABA) and are 100% sure you’re ready to start with full support straight away.
You like the sound of our services but would like to see how your child responds to the approach before looking into the Full Support option. You have funding in place for a high level of support and/or an EHCP which states your child requires an “ABA programme”.
For when you’re seeking Local Authority funding but need evidence that services based on behaviour analysis (also known as ABA) are right for your child. You have already been running a full programme and are looking to change provider
Families can often help their child with this option without the need to employ volunteers or tutors. Families usually enlist additional support such as volunteers, tutors, school/nursery staff. We provide the training and support for all additional members of the child’s team including school/nursery staff.

We accommodate your specific needs as you move through different stages of your child’s journey. It is possible, for example, to convert from a short-term package to a full support one or to reduce your hours in times of personal difficulties or financial context.

Also available

School specific support

We also offer school-specific support if your child mainly needs support at school rather than home. This is either arranged and funded through families or through LA’s or school’s who can apply with us directly. We have extensive experience helping children transition into nursery and school, and training staff to support them to ensure they can be as successful and independent as possible. This would need to be a Full Support Programme.

Training Courses

We offer a range of courses for parents, tutors and school staff that are run at the Child Autism Office and other venues. We also offer a range of training courses specifically for schools, to enable staff to understand autism, and how best to support your child.

Researchers

We are committed to ensuring that the Child Autism package your child receives is effective, and we’re proud to say that we work with University academics to conduct research into the effectiveness of our programmes. Although the research is still in its early stages, we’re seeing positive results in communication and overall outcomes, and we’re excited to continue our work to help autistic children and their families.

Specific-Support Modules

We offer a range of services tailored to meet the individual needs of autistic children.

Communication

Good communication is essential for the child’s quality of life and often reduces other behaviour difficulties. We can help teach your child to speak or to use picture or object exchange or sign language. Our case managers will assess which communication system is best for your child and show you how to capture your child’s motivation.

Social Skills

We offer a structured programme to help your child learn how to make friends, play and develop other social skills. Our case managers will assess your child to find starting points and take a systematic approach to teaching skills such as toy play, sharing, conversation skills, group play and emotional regulation skills.

Behaviour

Our case managers will analyse why the behaviour of concern is occurring and show you how to teach your child an alternative way of getting their needs met. We can work with schools, nurseries and other family members to ensure consistency.

Eating

We can help your child with restrictive diets using techniques such as systematic desensitisation to increase food choices.

Transition

We can help prepare your child for the transition to nursery, school or senior school, establishing targets to work on at home and reducing anxiety around the transition.

Anxiety

We can assess your child and provide tools to help them manage their emotions.

Toilet Training

We offer training in various methods for toilet training and can assess your child and family situation to provide the best method for you and your child
